Lent at LNPC
What is Lent?
Lent is the period of 40 days, (minus Sundays), beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending the Saturday before Easter.
Forty days mirrors Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness. (It does not include Sundays because they are considered 'mini-Easters,’ celebrations of the resurrection every week). In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism.
Lent Today:
Today, all around the world, Christians practice Lent as a time of self-reflection, repentance and fasting, to focus on God and be honest about our own and the world’s need for God. Lent prepares us to receive the good news of Easter.
Lent at LNPC
This year, in Lent we will explore the symbolism of ashes. (with prayer experiences adapted from The Seven Symbols of Ash, by Chris Paavola). We are marked with ashes at the beginning of Lent, the dust from which we are made, and to which we return. It is a sign of our mortality, grief and human vulnerability.
Lent Kits
Kits went out containing symbols in boxes for each week of Lent. (Don’t peek ahead!) We will do these prayer exercises together in zoom worship, but if you are not able to join us, there are directions enclosed for each one so they can be done on your own.
