The Sheridan Story at Hiawatha Academy
![]() BACKGROUND
More than 200,000 children in Minnesota live with food insecurity. Without reliable access to food – such as meal programs at school – the risk of hunger is very real. The Sheridan Story works to combat hunger in our community by filling the gaps to food access that children face: primarily weekends and summers. It provides 4-5 pounds of substantive, nutritious food directly to the children – at the end of each school week by putting the food directly into their backpacks for them to take home. As of January 2019, the Sheridan Story was serving over 6,500 kids in over 200 schools. We are partnered with Hiawatha Academy, who have 100-150 children in the program. This means that every Friday, four volunteers join a staff member from the school to discreetly place food directly into these students' backpacks. (There are also food packing events, Thursdays from 6-8 pm). Check out their website for more information on volunteering or contributing. Watch a VIDEO about The Sheridan Story. |
VOLUNTEER!
Find a slot (or few) at the link below and sign up to help. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR A CHILD?
It's $215 per year to sponsor a child through Sheridan Story. LNPC is sponsoring 8 kids who attend the school across the street! Four are through one month's tithe, and four are through congregation donations. If you would like to add one too, let us know, and you can donate to church with "Sponsor a child - Sheridan Story" in the memo. |
COORDINATOR NEEDED: Would you like to help coordinate this program for LNPC? This means primarily recruiting volunteers to fill the spots and being the main contact person. (All the other work is done by The Sheridan Story and the school to make this operate smoothly).
